Hits and Misses

This year in english, I stuggled a lot but, I had some good outcomes. Although I did not make the best grades on my essays, I learned alot about high school writing. I found the expectations alot higher. I also discovered new vocabulary and styles of writing. I think I was more successful in Purple HIbiscus because I understood the projects and liked the freedom that came with it.

My weakess part of english this year was writting the papers. Some were easier to write then other but it was still a stuggle. For most, I found reaching the correct length hard. I had strong paragraphs but because I didnt have the correct length, I had to add lots of unecessary details to my thesis and conclusion. I think this weakend my paper. Luckily, the writing center helped a bunch, but I still did not recieve the grade I wanted. I think I am a better writer from these mistakes and I hope to make a higher grade on upcoming papers.

Anticipating our next book

If something is destined to happen, it will happen without your interference.

I agree with this statement because if something is destined to happen it with happen. I think that you cannot change your future. There may be events that can impact your life but the future outcome will be the same. It is possible to change your way through life but it is impossible to change your destiny.

Who we are--our essential character and temperament--is fixed and unchangeable.

I agree/disaggree with this statement. I think you are born with "fixed" traits or unchangeable traits. These traits could be stubborness, or something more like dyslexia. On the other hand, there are traits such as level of kindness or patience. I think that over time you can grow more patient or be more kind, but something like stubborness doesnt useually change.

What am I afraid of?

I am not afraid of heights or bugs, but I am afraid of being alone. I hate staying home alone or going anywhere by myself. I am ten times more anxious and scared. I have to be with someone most of the time or I feel alone. If I am alone, there has to be music or any kind of sound. If there is no sound I will almost have a panic attack. I am not afraid of being alone because I feel left out. I am afraid of being alone because I feel vulnerable. If someone is there I feel safer. This fear is called Monophobia. Besides being home alone, I am also afraid of being alone in the future. I dont' know what I would do if all of my family died.

Purple Hibiscus reading 4/10

Purple Hibiscus is the most challenging book we have read this year. Unlike LOTF, this book is more realistic and serious. One important part of Purple Hibiscus is tracking the characters. The characters are all very different and have a different path in this book. For example, Kambili goes through drastic personality changes as she discovers her distant family and understands the world around her.

From read Purple Hibiscus, I think annotating is key to understanding what is going on. Through annotating , you can ask questions, track characters, and interpret events in your own words. I have noticed lot more details from annotating. It has also helped me to find the main ideas in chapters and write summaries.

Political Post

Article

In this article, Trump asssures Americans there will be a new healthcare plan made for the people. He states that his plan of letting obamacare explode is taking action. Trump points out tht many states have big problems with obamacare, which is true. Trump wants the democrat's support in making a new healthcare plan. He is open to recieving help to make new and efficient plan.

Overall, this article summarizes Trump's new perspective on Obamacare and how he will take action to change it. I think he is being open-minded and wants the opinions of others to try and create the best plan possible. It is now just a matter of time to see what they will come up with. I choose this article because I wanted to research Trumps's new plans of healthcare.

Learning Reflection 3/20

As a student this year I have learned a lot! I think studying has become a bigger deal. In math and science especially, studying 3-4 nights before the test makes a difference in your grade. In the beginning of the year, the tests and quizzes were a lot easier than now. I have started studying earlier and I think it is making a difference in my grades.
Besides studying, notes and homework and important. I think notes help you to have all the information to study for tests. Homework assignments can also make or break your grade. If you complete your homework you can usually keep a good grade. In general, preparing for tests, notes and completing homework assignments are three important ways of keeping good grades.

Weekend 3/20

St Patrick's day weekend is always really busy for me. I have been going to the parade since I was really little. This year I walked almost the whole parade route and ran into a lot of people I knew. After the parade I was so tired but I still had a dance to go to that night. I went to the dance, but it wasn't very fun. After I went to a friend's house and got ice cream.
On Sunday, I went back home and ate boiled crawfish with my family. My cousins also came over to celebrate my brother's birthday. We had vanilla birthday cake and ice cream. This was a really busy but fun weekend. I can't wait for the parade next year!

Analyze a song

The song "Umbrella" by Rihanna is explaining that she will stay true to whoever she is in a relationship with. She says they will will always be together, and be friends forever. She also explains through metaphor that they are a "star" couple. For example, she sings "we rockafella" which references to a famous person. Another metaphor is "You can stand under my umbrella."
Symbolism is also a bug part of this song's meaning. Besides the title, "Umbrella" the word is used to portray Rihanna and her partner. She says "you can stand under my umbrella" in reference to they will be together and she can be trusted.

Free Post

Over Mardi Gras break, I went skiing. This was my sixth year going to Steamboat, Colorado. We took a charter flight with lots of friends. The plane ride was only two and a half hours with no stops. It was super cold when we got there. We were there for seven days and skied for six. This was probably one of my favorite years skiing.
One of my favorite parts was night skiing. It was my first time to ski at night and it was really fun. The only bad part was that I dropped my glove and room key. Luckly, I found my glove.

Poem

Saturday morning
7:15
"On you marks"
"Set"
Pow
Feet pounding, heavy breathing
15,840 feet to go
racing against the clock
running
dying.

onomatopoeia, rhyme, slant rhyme

Vocal words

My family and I were taking a trip. We arrived at the airport two hours early. As we were getting our boarding passes, the woman at the counter told us we has never purchased tickets. My Dad was flabbergasted because he made sure to have bought the tickets early! The superior, who was also at the counter said he would take care of it. He offered to give us five free tickets to anywhere! We obviously choose our orignal destination. My dad showed mercy to the airport staff. The two employees admitted that they read the screen wront. in the end, we had an exceptional flight to our destination.

Research Skills 2/6

Through this research project I have learned two important skills, note taking, and siting sources. In this research project, notecards were one of the most time consuming parts. It payed off when we eventually had to write an essay outline. I learned about finding the important parts of a source.
The annotated bibliography was also a big part of this project. It was hard to summarize a longer source, but it was also useful for the essay. The annotated bibliography helped me to find the best sources.

ATDPTI reading response 2/6

As I read more into the book ATDPTI, I have enjoyed it more. Lots of sad and happy events have happened so far. We learned that Junior is actually very smart. Before Junior spoke in class we did not see this side of him. He outsmarted the teacher and left him shocked.
We have also come to know that the guys at his new school pick on him and call him names. On the brighter side, Penelope, Junior's crush is beginning to notice him. They both paired together to raise money.

Last semester of Freshman year 1/29

Most freshman can not wait until their first year of highschool is over. I can definitely relate but I am also going to miss this year. Everything can only get harder from here. This is one of the last years where our responsibilities are small.
For the next four months, my schedule is super packed. I am doing two sports which take up almost every weekday including saturdays. I am also going out of town almost every holiday. I also have to plan my summer for camp, Chilean exchange trip, beach trips, cross country bootcamp, and family vacations. I hope I can make the best of the rest of freshman year.

Reading response 1/29

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is a very interesting book. It includes humor that appeals to teens and a real life events. So far, the characters that have been introduced have different and relatable personalities. I can tell this book has many different things happening at once that are happy and sad.
I thought this book was not going to be a good book, but I am liking it more than I thought. I think that the more I read the more I will enjoy it. I cant wait to see what comes next.

Research Update

My research topic is the French revolution. It lasted ten years and took three to reconstruct. This revolution was a huge breakthrough for France. It turned France from an absolute monarchy into a united, patriotic country. Throughout this event, there were many attacks and batttles fought. Many were led by Napoleon Bonaparte. He was one of the greatest leaders because of his military tactics.
The French Revolution not only impacted France but it left a worldwide effect. Many breakthroughs in science were made that are still used today!

Last Semester

Last semester, I learned that you need to study early for tests. If you start studying earlier, you actually memorize the information instead of cramming everything in the night before. I made better grades once I started studying earlier.
This semester I am going to try to study early for all tests and quizes. I am also going to put more effort in homework assignments and classwork. I hope doing these things will keep my grades high. I want to try and get almost all A's this semester.

My Christmas Break

Over the break, I did alot of things. I went to four christmas eve parties, and caught up with family. It was finally Christmas day and I opened presants with my siblings and cousins. We also ate brunch. The week after Christmas I said goodbye to alot of my family that had came into town. I could finally catch up with my friends.  Not long after that was New years and I went to my parents party. After new years, it was almost time to go back to school, so I didn't do much. This break was fun but not long enough.

Research Update

My research project so far is going okay. My topic is broad, which make it hard to narrow down the important parts. One of the easiest parts was siting sources. On the other hand, finding them was not as easy, especially primary sources. The anootated bibliography was pretty easy, but time consuming.
It is stressful to complete tasks on certain dates instead of one deadline. It is also repatative because we work on it in two classes and for homework. There are also different expectations from teachers which can make it confusing.
